Another Scaup?

UPDATE: The verdict is a White Winged Scoter. Thanks to all who replied, it’s greatly appreciated!

Here we go again! I am a rookie at best when it comes to identifying seabirds. One of these days, I won’t have to ask, “What is that?”

This duck was seen at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine over the Christmas weekend. Click thumbnail image for a larger view.

Is this a Scaup? Is this a Scaup?

Any clues? Thanks for your help and happy birding!

    Hi John,

This is a male White-winged Scoter. Overall, it’s uniformly dark brown, with a bright white eye and a beautiful red bill. The white wing patch is barely visible in the photos, too.

    Hope this helps!
    Luke

Wonderful detail of the wild and crazy bill colors!
