Another sparrow I need help identifying
October 9, 2006 · Print This Article

Once again I ask for your help in identifying a sparrow.
I photographed this sparrow on the island of Islesboro, Maine on October 7th, 2006.
I do not have a full body shot, as this fella was flittling around and was very hard to photograph.

Savannah looks like a good bet. The pinkish bill and yellow lores stand out, and the breast striping and facial pattern look about right. A look at the tail would be helpful - a Savannah should have a cleanly forked tail.
Savannah Sparrow
I would vote for an eastern SAVANNAH SPARROW as the other two people have already stated. The streaking on the breast appears to me to be finner than that on the song sparrow. The length of the tail, I would expect would have been shorter than that of the song sp. and I would have expected the tail to have been notched rather than rounded on the terminal end as would be the case with the song sp. A whole body shot on a lateral view would have been nice. General body shape is one of the most important factors, when it comes to sparrows. The other factors that John mentions in the above I would agree with. Nice pics!
