Notice how the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker blends in with the tree it is on. If it had not moved it’s head, I would have never known it was there.
Happy birding!

John,
Welcome home!…..from being back home? Actually I’m not confused but understand perfectly as I grew up in Massachusetts and no live in PA. For me PA is home, but MA is back home. While I was out birding this past weekend I was thinking of you and hoping that you were getting some good PA Birds!
Vern
Vern;
Thank you for your thoughts!
I thought I may have confused some with that expression, but thought later I’m sure everyone knows what I mean.
Could have used some better weather while in PA, but none-the-less a great time.
John
Wow! that Sapsucker really did blend i almost like a giant creeper.-I’ve walked past creepers before.-We have been seeing an unusual amount of YB Sapsuckers and other birds which are usually a lot less common.Has the winter finch irruption been affecting your area?
Larry;
Yes the winter irruption is in full swing!
See my post on December 7th to see for yourself what is being reported. I have had Pine Siskins, Purple Finches and a White-Winged Crossbill visit my feeders here at home.
Also of note, is an irruption of sorts with Barred Owls. Many are being seen during the daylight hours and several have been seen lying dead along roadways, mostly first year owls.
