Chipping Sparrow – Spizella passerina
The “Chippers” have returned! Once the American Tree Sparrows leave, it’s not long until the Chipping Sparrow makes a comback here in Maine. Only one year did the Tree Sparrow and Chipping Sparrow share our yard at the same time.
I counted 13 Chippers around the yard this afternoon. I also found a pair taking up residence in a large Rose of Sharon in our front yard. Both birds were bringing grasses into the shrub, so I am assuming that nest building is occuring.
