Photo of the Day: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Our first of the year Ruby-throated Hummingbird arrived at 4:30 p.m. today and visited our window nectar feeder and had itself a long drink. It then landed on a nearby branch and posed for a few pictures. Later, if flew to the crabapple tree near the edge of the cove. This is where a pair nested last year.

I immediately called my wife to give her the good news.  She was ecstatic! When I first heard reports yesterday of these little jewels arriving in Maine, I immediately made nectar, left it cool, and filled the feeders. I’m so glad they are back!

The following photo was taken with a Canon 7D and a Canon 400mm f/4 L IS lens. Simply click the thumbnail below for a full-sized view. ©2011 John Briggs Photography
