That poor bird. I wonder what goes through peoples heads when they think these things, you know? I mean, if you were surrounding by strange creatures holding strange objects, how would you react? I love birds and I've only ever seen a rare bird once (a few years ago). In the area I live, especially. It was a Bald Eagle and I didn't even think about reporting it. . . but thinking about this now; I'm glad I didn't. I wouldn't want anything to happen to the Eagle.

Hello rfrancis, thank you for visiting!

I am a little confused about what map you are refering to that I published. You may have seen the map link in the eBird recent sightings widget on the right side bar. This widget is automated with reports of sightings around the state of Maine.

You have a good idea as to reporting the county only.

Hello Dawn! Thanks for stopping by.

I feel that it's my responsibility to do my part in protecting our beloved birds in any way that I can. If it means not reporting an owl because I know that it will turn into a fiasco and possibly bring harm to the creature, then so be it.

It has happen here in Maine several times. Not because of my reporting, but none-the-less, it has happened. This summer, an extremely rare sighting of an European Golden Plover at the Scarborough Marsh turned into a circus. There were actually individuals charging out into the marsh to flush this bird so they could get flight shots.

Think people! You are stressing the bird! All in the glory of getting that money shot.

Thanks for your input Dawn, it is greatly appreciated. It is a shame that non-reporting is happening, but I for one have more concern for the well being of a wild bird than someone wanting to tick a life list entry.

Hi John.

Are they being reported to the authorities? If not, they should be.

I am getting emails from around the country about this problem, but people are afraid to say anything. I am also getting emails castigating me for opening up this can of worms and admitting that I will not report a rare species until it has moved on. I am even being called a bully because my non-reporting is keeping others from checking off a life bird.

When others learn how to act around what nature has given us, maybe then I will begin reporting immediately what I see as far as rarities. Until then, I feel I am protecting these birds from those who may cause them harm. It's a shame that a few individuals have to ruin it for everyone.

I think you bear a partial responsibility because you published a detailed map of the location. Without that the twitchers would not know where to go to put it on their life list. Does it need to be made competitive or is that the only cultural imperative. Maybe Lincoln County would do and the sighting could be time delayed by a few days to leave the bird and the residents in peace.

Next time put that the Bristol Diner does a very good breakfast but that the best kept secret is the Cupboard on Huddle Road (see map).
