With yet another winter storm clobbering Maine with up to 15″ of wind blown snow forecasted, schools and businesses are closed once again. A major winter storm is laying snow from Alabama to Maine. Up and down the east coast, old man winter is refusing to loosen its grip.
For this weeks Bird Photography Weekly, I am thinking of warmer times. Back at the beginning of October, I went to the Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area near Dresden, Maine. The fields on this farm are a Sparrow magnet! With the beautiful fall colors, it made a beautiful backdrop for bird photography.
Here’s my entry for this week of an immature Savannah Sparrow. Photo taken October 12th, 2008. Click for larger view.
Happy birding!

Gorgeous capture there John. Very crisp and the bokeh has got to be one of the best I’ve ever seen. Truly inspiring!
Beautiful Savannah Sparrow. Great captured with nice bokeh/background.
That is a beautiful bird, and a beautiful photo overall.
Thanks Larry, Tabib and Spaverius! I appreciate your comments!
I was at this location for only 30 minutes. The fall colors were spectacular and I will make it a point to visit again next fall for a few hours.
I am going to bird the area this spring looking for Warblers and other migrants.
Gorgeous and a sight for sore eyes. I haven’t seen a Savannah since last fall. It is perfect for a day like today when the snow is swirling and the wind howling.
Superb shot of the Savannah, John.
I hope you’re all ok over there.
That’s a beautiful photo with great detail on the bird.
Beautiful photo from your warmer weather archives! Hope you get a big melt to follow this storm.
Fantastic shot! Can’t wait to see what you find in the spring.
What a lovely photo with the sparrow bathed in golden light! You must be buried in snow today! I hope you can stay warm and dry!
Great shot John. Such a pretty sparrow! It makes me look forward to spring more so I can see one for myself.
Hope you dig out soon. All of this snow is starting to get depressing. I can’t even imagine how much you all have with this additional 15 inches!
Nice photo of the Savannah John.-I guess I shoudn’t complain about winter-I’m sure you have it a lot tougher in Maine than I do here in CT.
Great photo stay warm.
I’m one of those in the south (TN) fortunate enough to have been by-passed by the snow. You folks have had quite a winter.
Love the sparrow image with the beautiful fall sprigs and bits of fiber on his mouth. Beautiful.
A wonderful picture with a nice posture and wonderful sharpness. Thanks for sharing. Yeh It looks like the winter is really snowy and cold in some areas!!
He looks beautiful against that backdrop – almost like he’s popping out of the photo as well as those branches!
Wow! What a beautiful picture of that sav. sparrow! That is a very serious look he gave you!! I don’t think I could do winter in Maine…lovely that it is, but posting pictures from Spring or Summer is a good idea to keep the spirit up while waiting for ole man winter to wind down!!
Thanks for visiting my blog.. Hope you see higher temps soon!
What a lovely photo! I really love the blurred background colors – they serve as a nice accent to this drab (but beautiful) little bird.
