For his latest school science fair project he has invented painted, plastic decals that can be placed — discreetly — right in the middle of a window pane. “This paint is a colour that birds can see but humans can’t,” he said Wednesday on CBC Radio’s All in a Day. “It’s like putting a big stop sign in the middle of the window.”

So why would anyone want to kill them? In the upscale Bay Area retirement community of Rossmoor, it’s because acorn woodpeckers have been mistaking wooden homes, built within the birds’ natural habitat, as trees.

Here is an update to the devastating fire that struck the Yarmouth Business Complex on the night of Janurary 2nd, 2008.

YARMOUTH (NEWS CENTER) — The owner of a business building in Yarmouth destroyed by fire says he wanted a space for new businesses to thrive. Art Dyer bought the building at 500 Route 1 almost two years ago. 26 businesses used space in the building when the fire started Friday night. Almost everything was lost in the fire. Dyer says fire investigators cannot pinpoint the cause but he says the fire was not arson and started on the second floor. The building will have to be destroyed but Dyer hopes to rebuild a similar space for new business to thrive.

In the above video, Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth proprietor Derek Lovitch is interviewed.

Initial estimates put the damage at over $3 million dollars. Seven investigators from the state fire marshal’s office and five ATF agents determined that the fire was not arson, but a cause may never be known. More than two dozen businesses were based in the building.

Sadly the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, and 9 other businesses in the building are no more. A 6 alarm fire destroyed the building last night.

YARMOUTH (NEWS CENTER) — Fire crews are still on scene trying to get a six alarm fire under control on Route 1 in Yarmouth.
The fire first broke out just after 9pm Friday at a commercial structure that houses several businesses and organizations, including The Wild Bird Center.
A full task force alarm has been sounded, meaning that all available mutual aid from Cumberland County is being called to the scene.
To assist in fighting the fire, power has been cut to the immediate area, leaving many nearby residents in the dark.
There are currently no road closures and no injuries have been reported. Crews expect to be on-scene well into the morning.
