Skywatch Friday: Anniversary Rainbow

Last evening, just before the sun set, a strong cold front swept through the area. In its wake, a series of beautiful rainbows graced the landscape here on the mid coast of Maine. These rainbows had the most vivid colors that I have ever seen. And to make the natural phenomenon even more special was that they occured on our wedding anniversary.

All photos taken with a Canon 40D and a Canon Nifty Fifty lens. Simply click a thumbnail for a full-sized view.

The first double rainbow occured over Winnegance Bay during low tide.

Shortly after the above rainbow dissipated, another double rainbow occured over the area of the town of Bath.

I would have loved to get a photo with a full view of the rainbows. I guess it’s time to think about getting a wide angle lense.

Snow laden skies are my favorite. There is a unique beauty in snow falling from the sky. In its aftermath, the landscape is transformed into a work of art unknown to other seasons. The following image was captured last weekend in our backyard, near the edge of the cove.

The Presidential Range is a mountain range located in the White Mountains of the state of New Hampshire, almost entirely in Coos County. The most notable summits of the range are named for prominent Americans, either public figures of the 18th and 19th centuries or Presidents.

Mt. Jackson — after Charles Thomas Jackson (19th c. geologist)
Mt. Pierce — after Franklin Pierce (formerly Mt. Clinton — after DeWitt Clinton)
Mt. Eisenhower — after Dwight Eisenhower
