This Warbler has me baffled along with other birder friends on Facebook. I took the photos at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine on Wednesday morning. It looks somewhat like a Yellow-rumped Warbler, but something about it does not say this species.

The bird did not vocalize. Notice the black spot in the middle of the chest area in the second photo. When the bird fled, there were no signs of a yellow rump. Under side of tail is yellow.

Anyone care to give their two cents on what this species may be? Feel free to let me know by commenting on this post. Thanks!

UPDATE: After receiving many emails, Twitter and ChirpTracker replies and replies to this post it’s nearly unanimous, the Warbler is a first summer American Redstart. Many thanks to all who helped with the ID!

Hi. Nice photos of a male American Redstart in first spring plumage.

Looks like a 1st spring male American Redstart. Beautiful bird and surprisingly different from an adult!

It looks like a first year redstart from my inexperienced view.

It appears to be an odd plumage variation of a 1st year American Redstart (maybe a hybrid of some kind?) Nice catch.

I agree that this is a first spring male American Redstart. Nice capture!

Thanks everyone for the ID help! It’s unanimous, first spring American Redstart.

I love that photo John. How the heck did you get it on a snag posing like that?? Picture book worthy.

I meant branch, not snag obviously. Runs away blushing. ;o)
